Tomas Causes Damage and Kills 14 on St. Lucia

Hurricane Tomas, which is now a tropical depression, hit St. Lucia as a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday morning causing major damage (click here to see aerial footage of the damage). So far at least 14 people have been killed on St. Lucia and the death toll is expected to rise. Tropical Depression Tomas now threatens Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic later this week.

Tomas is currently moving west-northwest and is expected to turn to the northwest during the day today, with a north and north-northwest turn expected tomorrow and early Friday. Tomas will pass east of Jamaica on Friday and brush the western coast of Haiti on Saturday. Once past Haiti, it appears Tomas will track generally to the northeast and out to sea.

Despite Tomas weakening to a tropical depression, conditions remain favorable for additional strengthening over the next 12 hours. Tomas could become a tropical storm again later this afternoon and perhaps even a hurricane by early Friday. The heaviest squalls will remain over the central Caribbean Sea today. Squalls will begin to spread into Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic by Thursday afternoon or evening.
