Plains: Severe Weather Outbreak Possible Wednesday into Thursday

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms will be possible today across the Southern Plains as an upper level disturbance interacts with warm, moist unstable air. The greatest risk for widespread severe thunderstorms will occur this afternoon and evening across much of Oklahoma, southern Kansas, and the Red River Valley of north Texas. Storms that develop within this region are likely to produce frequent cloudy-to-ground lightning, large hail, damaging winds, and destructive tornadoes. Heavy rainfall will also be possible across much of Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri during the morning and afternoon hours with 1-3 inches expected and isolated higher amounts of up to 5 inches possible. Localized flash flooding will be possible through these regions.

This evening into tonight the severe weather will move further east with a complex of strong to severe storms possible over eastern Oklahoma, northeast Texas, and into western Arkansas. On Thursday morning, these storms will continue to push south and east and gradually weaken. However, additional storms may develop across eastern Oklahoma Thursday afternoon and push through the Arklatex region once again into Thursday night.
